How Fillings Have Improved in Recent Years

Dental Fillings in Des Moines IA

Metallic fillings used to be the best option for treating cavities, but technology has evolved. In fact, many patients who haven’t had a filling in several years are surprised to discover that they now have a better option: tooth-colored fillings. Made with composite resin (which consists of plastic, silica and glass ionomer), tooth-colored fillings have a long list of benefits. Dr. Chris McDonald shares some of those perks.

They Look Nicer

Tooth-colored fillings are true to their name: they match the natural color of each patient’s teeth. Rather than having one shade available, Dr. McDonald blends resin that corresponds with the existing tooth color. This color match makes it extra difficult for friends and colleagues to notice a filling in the first place. In contrast, the shininess of amalgam fillings makes them more conspicuous.

They Have Become More Durable

In the past, most dentists did not consider resin a suitable option for fillings because of the short amount of time they would last in the mouth. However, as the technology has improved, resin has proven to last around seven to 10 years (and sometimes longer with excellent care) before needing replacement. While amalgam fillings still have a longer lifespan on average, tooth-colored fillings are at least comparable, meaning that patients do not have to sacrifice much value.

They Are Smoother

Composite resin fillings can achieve a smoother tooth surface than silver fillings. Rough surfaces are more likely to gather plaque, while also making it more difficult to remove that plaque with a toothbrush. In that sense, tooth-colored fillings do their part to prevent you from needing more fillings in the future.

They Are Mercury-Free

Amalgam fillings contain mercury, unlike their tooth-colored counterparts. The amount of mercury is so low that the FDA’s research does not show sufficient reason to worry about it causing harm to the general population. However, now that patients have a choice in filling material, it does make sense to choose a material that is free of mercury.

They Bond to Teeth Better

Resin material does a better job of clinging to the tooth, which means a tooth-colored filling is less likely to dislodge than an amalgam filling. Moreover, because tooth-colored fillings more easily fit in the existing space created by a cavity, Dr. McDonald can leave more of the natural tooth intact.
